The Acacia Dance_
Location: Clocolan, Freestate Material: S.A. Pine
A golden path leads up to the folly’s permeable walls - find your own way through. The vertical timber ‘shingles’, cleverly designed as hanging pivots are set in constant motion by the elements. They sit behind each other to conceal an unobstructed 3 x 3m space for reflection within. Light and shadow are continually at play as the structure's external skin is formed and reformed by both the warm sun and a gentle breeze.

Located within a rare clearing in a densely populated Acacia forest, the folly takes clues from its site to define its form. With the pristine setting in mind, the structural material is left untreated so that it can decompose over time back into the ground.
A rail based super structure supports a threshold of hanging elongated shingles that are free to move in the wind.
Moving quickly between idea sketches and concept models to the workshop and back. A feedback loop of trial and error that is made in real through the 1:1 scale testing of ideas.
The strict and rigid order of the structure is in stark contrast to its organic setting allowing it to neatly announce itself as a considered curation within the bounds of its natural surrounds: a respectful tension between natural and man made.
